I think Patrick Abercrombie cuts an interesting figure in all of this, being both the most powerful town planner England ever had and yet also the founder of the Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England and the creator of the Green Belt. I can only surmise that he saw the two realms as polar opposites and that one must plan cities and towns to preserve the country, and vice versa, and never the twain shall meet.
